보존과학자: 어린 학생이 여긴 무슨 일이니~?
어린이: 선생님! 쉿~ 이건 비밀인데요. 우리 엄마가 아끼시던 병을 깨트려서요.
보존과학자: 아이고 병을 깨트렸구나. 어디 다친 데는 없니?
어린이: 다치진 않았는데, 엄마가 이거 아시면 엄청 화내실 거예요. 혹시 이 병도 치료할 수 있으실까요?
보존과학자: 어 그래? 그럼 선생님하고 한번 보존처리실 들어가 볼까?
어린이: 우와~! 도자기들이 엄청 많아요.
보존과학자: 그렇지~? 이곳은 옛날의 전통기법과 현대의 과학기술을 적용해서 문화재의 상처를 치료해 주는 곳이야. 전시하기 전에는 좀 아프고 손상되었던 유물인데 복원을 해서 지금은 잘 치료해가지고 끝난 상태의 유물이야. 선생님이 보여주고 싶은 게 있는데 한번 같이 가볼까?
어린이: 네~!
어린이: 어~!? 이거는 제가 깨트린 유리병이랑 많이 비슷하게 생겼어요.
보존과학자: 그렇지~? 이 유물은 너가 가져온 유리병하고 모양이 아주 유사하게 생겼지? 경상북도 경주에 황남동에 있는 큰 무덤이 있어. 거기서 나온 봉수형 유리병이라고 하는데 구연부가 보면 입이 튀어나왔다고 해서 봉황의 얼굴이다 해서 봉수형 유리병이야.
어린이: 국보!? 엄청 소중한 거네요? 너무 새 거 같이 깨끗해 보여요~ 이것도 그럼 치료받은 거예요?
보존과학자: 그럼~ 이 유리병이 처음 발견되었을 때는 이미 너무 오랜 세월이 지나서 깨진 채로 발견되어 있었어. 그 뒤로 1980년대에 보존처리했었는데 에폭시라는 재료를 사용해 붙였지. 그렇지만 시간이 경과함에 따라서 빛과 열에 의해서 색이 누렇게 변하게 되어 미관이 해치게 되었던 거야. 그래서 선생님이 2014년도에 4월부터 10월까지 한 6개월 동안 보존처리했던 유물이야. 저부 - 동체부 – 구연부를 접합을 하고 정확하게 접합을 하다 보니까 동전 크기만한 빈 공간이 있는거야. 과연 이 편이 어디 있을까 (빈 공간) 고민을 많이 해봤는데, 다행히 경주박물관에 봉수형 유리 편이 있다는 걸 알게 되어 가지고 그렇게 비어있던 38개의 편을 전달받아서 함께 복원했고 1600년 만에 원래의 봉수형 유리병을 (복원 전, 복원 후) 완벽하게 복원했던 그런 기억이 나는 유물이야.
보존과학자: 재밌는 건 손잡이를 보면은 금실로 촘촘~하게 묶여져있는 거 보이지?
어린이: 네~!
보존과학자: 너무도 소중하다 보니까 이 금실을 가지고 (당시에) 다시 보수했던 이런 흔적들이 있는 아주 재밌는 유물이야.
어린이: 그 당시에 수리해놓은 것도 재현하다니, 정말 그 시대 때 있었던 것처럼 완전히 만들어놨네요?
보존과학자: 그렇지, 우리 문화 고유의 물건에 담겨진 가치를 보존하고 후손들에게까지 잘 전달될 수 있게 하는 건 너무 중요하고 또 가슴 벅찬 일이야.
어린이: 제가 지금까지 만난 문화재 속에 이런 이야기들이 담겨있는 줄 몰랐어요. 선생님 급 멋져보임!
어린이: 선생님! 혹시 제 것도 깨끗하게 고칠 수 있을까요?
보존과학자: 그럼~ 그런데 일단은! 먼저 우리가 같이 이거를 복원해보면 어떨까?
어린이: 좋아요!
보존과학자: 편과 편이 지금 떨어져 있잖아, 이게 표시가 안나려면은 편을 정확히 붙여야 되거든. 그래서 이렇게 딱 선생님이 정확하게 붙이면 접착제를 뿌려주면 되거든.
어린이: 우와~! 진짜 감쪽같아요! 감사해요 선생님.
보존과학자: 아무리 감쪽같아도 엄마한텐 솔직하게 말해야 돼. 그래야 멋진 친구지?
어린이: 네~ 선생님!

conservation scientist: What brings you here young man?
child: Sir, shh, please! shh. This...is a secret...

child: I accidentally broke my mom's favorite bottle.
conservation scientist: Ah, You broke the bottle! Are you hurt anywhere? Oh my goodness, this is the bottle you broke! Did you get hurt anywhere?
child: I'm not, but my mom will be furious if she finds out. Could you please restorethis bottle?
onservation scientist: Ah? Okay. Why don’t you come with me into the conservation laboratory?
child: Okay.
child: Wow! There are so many pieces of ceramic here!
conservation scientist: You're right.That’s right. This is a place that treats the wounds of cultural assets by applying traditional techniques and modern technology. Before the exhibition these artifacts were damaged, but now they have been restored and completed. I want to show you something. Would you like to come with me?
child: Yes! Sure!
child: Wow, this looks very much like the glass bottle I broke.
conservation scientist: Yes it is Yes, that’s right. This artifact herelooks very similar to the glass bottle you broughtin, doesn’t it? There is a big tomb in Hwangnam-dong in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do. This is a Phoenix-shaped Glass Bottle, which came from that tomb. Because it's called the Phoenix-shaped Glass Bottle. It is Korean National Treasure No. 193, Phoenix-shaped Glass Bottle.
child: Korean National Treasure? What a precious thing! But, it looks so new and clean. Was this one was restored as well?
conservation scientist: Yes, that’s right. When this glass bottle was first discovered, it was already broken because so much time had passed. Since then, in the 1980s, it was preserved and attached using a material called epoxy. However, as time passed, the color turned yellow due toexposure to light and heat, which spoiled the beauty of it. So, this is one of the artifacts that I spent six months restoring by applying a new preservation treatment from April to October of 2014. I bonded the bottom, body, and mouth parts, and I bonded them exactly, and then I found an empty space the size of a coin. I thought a lot about where the missingpieces could be. Fortunately, I found out that there were some pieces of the glass bottle in the Gyeongju Museum. I received 38 pieces that were empty and restored them together. I was able to receive 38 pieces from the museum and completely restore the original bottle for the first time in 1,600 years.
conservation scientist: The funny thing is, if you look at the handle, you can see it's tightly bound with gold thread, right?
child: Yes.
conservation scientist: This is a very interesting artifact because it was so delicate even when it was made that it has traces of being repaired with this gold thread even at that time.
child: I can't believe it's reproducing what was repaired at that time. It's completely made like it was back then, isn’t it? It’s hard to believe! It is really possible to completely restore it to the way it was when it was repaired so long ago?
conservation scientist: Yes it is. It is very important and sometimes overwhelming work to preserve the values contained in the objects of our culture and deliver them to future generations.
child: I had no idea that such stories were a part of the culture I have experienced so far. Suddenly, I think you are amazing!
child: Sir! Do you think you can restore mine too, and make it like new again?
conservation scientist: Sure. But why don't we first try to restore it together?
child: Like it! That sounds great!
conservation scientist: This small piecehere is now separated from the main piece. If you don't want to see the crackline, we have to stick the pieces together exactly.

child: Wow! That’s really amazing. Thank you, sir.
conservation scientist: No matter how good it looks though, you still need to be honest with your mother. That's how you become a great boy.
child: Yes, sir!
