This painting illustrates a story about Chen Tuan, a Chinese scholar of the late Tang and early Song periods. The story relates that Chen Tuan was riding on a donkey during the turmoil of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period when he heard from a stranger that Zhao Kuangyin (r. 960–976) had founded the Song Dynasty. He was so delighted that this man he admired had become emperor that he fell from his donkey, exclaiming “Now the world will be at peace!”
This work vividly depicts the moment Chen heard the good news. Bright and refreshing bluish-green is used across the picture plane. Yun Duseo created this painting for King Sukjong (r. 1674–1720). In the upper-left section of the painting is a poem by King Sukjong about the content of the work.
