Calligraphy and Painting
This painting depicts the Daoist sage Chen Tuan (陳摶, 871‒989) as he falls off his donkey upon hearing the excellent news that Zhao Kuangyin (趙匡胤, r. 927‒976) had been crowned Emperor of Song Dynasty. Chen Tuan is smiling as he tumbles off in front of a watching traveler. These figures are described humorously. The literati painter Yun Du-seo (尹斗緖, 1668‒1715) presented this painting to King Sukjong (肅宗, r. 1674‒1720) to express his wishes for peaceful reign by the king. After appreciating the painting, King Sukjong added a poem describing the episode of Chen Tuan in its upper section.
