Serapis

Excavated from Hotan in western China, this terracotta statue of the Egyptian god Serapis is thought to have been produced around the second or third century. Symbolizing both abundance and the underworld, Serapis was widely worshipped in the Hellenistic region. With long hair and a full beard, Serapis is seated majestically on a pedestal. The front and back of the statue were made separately and then joined together before firing, so that the inside is hollow. A similar statue was found in Faiyum, Egypt. As such, this statue is an important artifact that demonstrates the introduction of ancient Mediterranean culture to the eastern part of Central Asia.
