The surface of this gilt-silver cup and stand set is elaborately embossed with special milling techniques, demonstrating highly advanced crafting skill. The milling technique involves pressing a thin layer of gold onto an embossed relief or incised design and then delicately hammering the gold so that it assumes the design, creating an embossed relief with a uniquely three-dimensional effect. The upper rim of the stand and the body of the cup are intricately carved with peony patterns. At least one other Goryeo cup-and-stand set like this one has been found, but it was made in celadon. It is believed that the practice of making sets like this was reasonably widespread at the time. This particular pair is assumed to have been part of someone’s tea set.
