This is a painting of Joseon naval forces on maneuvers. It was jointly donated by the Presbyterian Church of Korea and the Uniting Church of Australia. The painting was originally a gift to the missionary delegation from the Presbyterian Church of Victoria in 1911. The Australians were visiting Gyeongsang Church in Busan, Korea. Reverend Frank Paton, the head of the delegation, kept the painting until he gave it back to Korea through the Uniting Church of Australia and the Presbyterian Church of Korea, which in turn jointly donated it to the National Museum of Korea. This painting shows Korean naval forces on maneuvers in the late Joseon Dynasty. At the center is the battleship of the commander of the three provinces of Chungcheong, Jeolla, and Gyeongsang, and unfolding from the center are the battleships of the Chungcheong Squadron, the Left and Right Jeolla Squadron, and the Left and Right Gyeongsang Squadron. This array is called chemja jin (尖字陣) as
it looks like the Chinese character 尖(pronounced "cheom" in Korean).
