Buddhist Sculpture
This sculpted statue portrays a seated apsara, or heavenly musician. The image of apsara used to be inscribed mainly on the mandorla of a Buddhist statue or the platform of a stone pagoda. Another example of the image of apsara portrayed as a three-dimensional sculpture such as this is the shrine-shaped gilt-bronze sarira reliquary unearthed from the West Three-story Stone Pagoda at the Gameunsa Temple Site.
