This tri-legged cauldron was excavated from the Earthen Fortification in Pungnap-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul. This type of bronze cauldron, created in the shape of the Big Dipper, is known to have been used to cook and heat foods. The body, legs, and handle piece were produced separately and then attached to each other. The handle piece is elegantly curved in the shape of a soaring dragon and its tip is intricately decorated with a dragon’s head. Cauldrons such as this were introduced in the 4th and 5th centuries in the course of exchanges between Baekje and the Southern Dynasties of China, and were transferred to members of the local elite where Baekje governed local regions.
