This painting documents a famous scene from Chinese lore as King Mu of the Zhou Dynasty shares a banquet with the goddess Xi Wangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, at mythical Mount Kunlun. Probably originally composed of eight panels, only four remain. The first panel (from the right) shows Xi Wangmu, surrounded by heavenly maidens, but the second and third panels, which presumably depicted King Mu, are missing. The left side shows a group of Taoist immortals crossing the Turquoise Pond to attend the banquet. This scene was a favorite of late Joseon era painters since it symbolized happiness and longevity.
