This ink painting depicting a summer scene at Gyeongbokgung Palace against Baegaksan Mountain was made in 1915 by An Jung-sik (penname: Simjeon, 1861-1919). The artist divided the landscape into three sections to capture the haetae statues with trees in the foreground, Gwanghwamun Gate and various palace buildings in the middle ground, and the ridges and peaks of Baegaksan and Bukhansan Mountains in the background. The painting also contains a postscript and the artist’s seal, revealing its title Baegak Chunhyo (“Spring Dawn at Baegaksan Mountain”), the date of its production (“a summer’s day”), and the painter’s penname (Simjeon).
