This is a painting of a gathering for the sermons of the four Buddhas, namely, Amitabha Buddha, Bhaisajyaguru Buddha, Sakyamuni Buddha, and Maitreya Buddha. The painting was done at the suggestion of Yi Jong-rin (1538-1611), the first son of Prince Deogyang, who was himself the fifth son of King Jungjong. The painting was formerly enshrined at Sangwonsa Temple in Hamchang, the hometown of Yi Jong-rin’s grandfather-in-law. This Buddhist painting is one of the most renowned produced with the support of the royal family in the mid-Joseon Period.
