This bronze mirror was ornamented by attaching thin gold or silver plate to the metal’s surface in the direction of the grain, after which lacquer was applied to the entire surface and then selectively peeled away to create a dramatic contrast between the metallic color and the black lacquer. This rare technique originated in China during the Tang Dynasty.
