Buncheong Ware and White Porcelain
This dish contains exotic patterns not commonly found on traditional Joseon white porcelain wares. It includes the Chinese characters “Hampung nyeonje” (咸豐年制, ‘produced in the Xianfeng Year’) written in cobalt blue underglaze on the inside bottom. “Xianfeng” refers to the reign of Emperor Wenzong (r. 1851-1861) of Qing China. It is a precious artifact that provides information on the production trends in Joseon white porcelain in the mid-19th century.
