In this six-paneled screen, Kim Hong-do presented his own interpretation of the classical Chinese theme of the “elegant gathering in the western garden,” which was based on a famous assemblage of artists and writers that occurred in 1087 in Bianliang (the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty, present-day Kaifeng). The scenic garden of the title belonged to Wang Jinging (1036- c. 1093), who presided over this gathering of sixteen of China’s most legendary literary and artistic talents, including Su Shi (1037-1101) and Li Gonglin (c. 1049-1106).
