This folding screen depicts the Great Battle of the Feishui River (淝水大戰) in which Emperor Fu Jian (符堅, r. 357-385) of the Former Qin (前秦) in China was defeated by the General Xie Xuan (謝玄, 343-388) of Eastern Jin (東晉) in 383. Violent clashes among large military forces are epically described across the eight panels. The fierce battles set against winter scenery are vividly and exquisitely portrayed. In 1715, King Sukjong (肅宗, r. 1674-1720) appreciated this painting and wrote a related poem. This folding screen was produced at the Joseon court as a didactic painting in order to convey lessons from this historical event.
