This four-meter handscroll presents the scenery of the Nine-bend Stream of the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian Province, China. The Wuyi mountains are where Zhu Xi (朱熹, 1130–1200) taught his disciples during the Southern Song dynasty and were therefore revered by Joseon literati as the birthplace of Neo-Confucianism. Using a dry brush, Kang Sehwang briefly expressed the main features of the landscape and included lines from “Boat Song of Wuyi's Nine Bends” by Zhu Xi at the top of each scene.
