Introduction

- Mesopotamia, Great Cultural Innovations, Selections from the Metropolitan Museum of Art
- This exhibition highlights objects from The Department of Ancient Near Eastern Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This selection of art works in this show demonstrates the breadth of Mesopotamian ingenuity, craftsmanship, and style from the fourth millennium to the first millennium BCE.
- The early material demonstrates the remarkable cultural innovations which first took place in the fertile crescent, including the birth of cities, the invention of writing, and the introduction of numerous genres of artmaking still in use today. Numerous objects attest to complex and nuanced notions of personal identity, from cylinder seals to jewelry to portraits in many styles. Others will illuminate aspects of Mesopotamian religion and the divine. Many will point to complex and shifting power relations throughout the region, including the legendary empires of the first millennium BCE.
- A theme throughout the galleries is a close attention to material concerns and the artisans’ technical prowess.
- The World Art Gallery’s Mesopotamia Gallery is the very first permanent exhibition hall dedicated to this civilization. This exhibition will be open to viewers until September 29, 2024.
