Bronze Object with Bird Images

This bronze object was discovered at a ritual site in Dong-oe-dong, Goseong. It is incised with a central design of two large birds, surrounded by forty smaller birds, along with fern, zigzag, and dot patterns. Ancient people regarded birds as auspicious beings that could traverse between heaven and earth, which is why so many artifacts, made of bronze or other materials, are decorated with bird images. Many items with bird decorations were used in rituals, and the holes along the outer edges of this object indicate that it may once have been sewn to a person’s clothing, perhaps to be worn during a ritual.
