Identification Tag of Tax Official
In the late Joseon period, the government office of Pyeongsiseo, or “Market Control Office,” was responsible for setting prices, regulating markets, and collecting taxes from licensed merchants. Officials of Pyeongsiseo who collected taxes from merchants were required to wear identification tags such as this one, which seems to have been worn by an official responsible for collecting taxes from a store in Seoul that specialized in selling jokduri, a female coronet worn for special occasions.
