On the order of his father King Yeongjo, Crown Prince Sado was executed by being locked in a rice chest for several days. In this epitaph tablet, King Yeongjo laments his son’s demise, but also scolds the late prince for forcing his father to kill his own son, a tragedy unparalleled throughout time. Thus, the epitaph shows the king expressing his sorrow while simultaneously justifying his harsh sentence.
