Rocks and Orchids
Kim Eungwon (sobriquet: Soho) was a painter active in the late Joseon period and modern era. He emulated ink orchids by Yi Haeung (1820–1898), who was better known as Heungseon Daewongun. Kim’s orchid paintings have been highly praised both by his contemporaries and the people of today. The painter and art critic Kim Yongjun stated that “Kim Eungwon inherited the painting styles of Kim Jeonghui and Heungseon Daewongun, and he skillfully painted the Four Gentlemen, a symbol of the zeitgeist of the Japanese colonial era.” In this folding screen, Kim Eungwon elegantly illustrated slender orchids emerging from rocks and cliffs and then extending themselves with renewed vigor.
