Immortals Boating on the Sea

A small boat is leisurely sailing here through a surging sea. Unlike the boatman who is paddling with all his might, two scholars are leaning over the bow and watching the raging wind and waves. The reading table, books, a vase with a spray of red plum blossoms, and a crane perched on an old tree imply that this scene depicts a boat trip by Daoist immortals who have transcended the human world. In this work, Sim Sajeong, who was fifty-eight at the time, portrayed these noble unwavering beings surrounded by a harsh world by applying his own distinctive painting style.
