In this painting, a boy wearing double top knots is depicted playing a Korean double-reed musical instrument known as a piri. The red gourd carried on his back is a symbol of a Daoist immortal. He appears to be descending from a mountain with elixir plants and pine needles in a basket. Kim Hongdo (sobriquet: Danwon), who excelled at painting a wide range of themes, was also skilled at painting Daoist immortals. This work is a beautiful painting of a Daoist immortal in which the powerful lines in the drapery folds contrast with the delicate lines in the face and the transparent colors all harmonize with one another. The upper-right corner of the painting bears an inscription reading “painted by Saneung,” which is followed by the seals “Hongdo” and “Saneung.”
