Sunrise over the Ocean

Dohwaseo (Royal Bureau of Painting) court painter Kim Deuksin (sobriquet: Geungjae) was born into the Gaeseong Kim family known for producing a number of court painters. In this work, a flock of geese flies toward a rock soaring above a vigorously roiling sea while a red sun rises in the distance. In the upper section of the painting is a eulogy composed by the late-Joseon literati and calligrapher Hong Uiyeong (1750-1815). He relates that he wishes to wander around the islands, both small and large, with a friend since things are not going his way with his children or his home.
The lower portion of the painting bears an inscription stating that the commoner literati and painter Yi Yusin (mid-18th–first half of the 19th century), the court painter Yi Inmun (1745–after 1824), and the civil official and noted calligrapher Yu Hanji (1760–1834) appreciated the work together in 1799. This inscription suggests that this painting was produced around that year. It is an interesting work documenting how the painters and literati gathered to create it, appreciate it together, and compose a eulogy.
