Hermit Sage

The Hermit sage, or Dokseong is portrayed alone in contemplation in the mountains. This painting also features several animals, including a crane above the pine tree, a bird on a peony, deer, and a turtle, all of which appear to be associated with the ten longevity symbols.
This painting was produced by the monk-painters Geumho-dang Yakhyo, Monghwa, and Seongyeop with the financial support of Yakhyo. Yakhyo actively served as a monk-painter in Chungcheong-do Province from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century. He also enthusiastically participated in Buddhist services at temples as a donor and contributed property to temples and to his neighbors.
