Ksitigarbha and the Ten Kings of Hell

Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva is well known for postponing his achievement of nirvana, which is considered the ultimate goal in Buddhism, and vowing not to pass into Buddhahood until all the sentient beings suffering in hell have been saved. His existence shows a different path to enlightenment. This painting depicts Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva holding a transparent wish-granting jewel while surrounded by other figures, including Venerable Daoming holding a staff, Ghost King Poisonless clasping his hands together, and the Ten Kings of Hell accompanied by their assistants and messengers.
