This painting depicts a gathering of Tripitaka Bodhisattvas, including Divyagarbhah Bodhisattva overseeing the heavens, Dharanimdhara Bodhisattva overseeing the earthly world, and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva overseeing the underworld. The composition and style of this painting suggest that it may have been produced in the eighteenth century.
The belief in these Tripitaka Bodhisattvas is not based on Buddhist scriptures, but derives from the Buddhist Water and Land Ritual. During the ritual, a Tripitaka Bodhisattvas painting was hung to invite these deities administering heaven, earth, and the underworld and to ask them for the salvation of the souls wandering in water and land by presenting offerings to them.
