Illustrated Manuscript of the “Universal Gateway of Avalokiteshvara”

This manuscript contains the content of the “Universal Gateway of Avalokiteshvara” chapter from the Saddharmapundarika Sutra(The Lotus Sutra). The manuscript begins with a depiction of numerous bodhisattvas and other members of the audience that gathered to hear the Buddha’s sermon. In front of the Buddha preaching with his right hand raised is a figure with the appearance of a bodhisattva kneeling with his hands clasped and listening to the Buddha’s words.
This manuscript was made in the Ming Dynasty of China in 1432, and it is estimated that the image of a Bodhisattva kneeling alone in front of the Buddha and listening to the Buddha’s words was came to Joseon around the 15th century.
