White multiflora roses are depicted in the lower-right portion of this fan, three butterflies are flying to the left of the flowers. Next to a giant purple butterfly is an inscription reading “How come the butterfly from Zhuangzi’s dream is floating upon the fan?” This inscription indicates how butterflies in a painting brought to mind the anecdote of Zhuangzi’s butterfly dream to the literati of the time.
