Dragonflies and Lotus Flowers

In this painting, a red dragonfly is flying towards some lotus flowers on a pond and a damselfly is perched on a lotus leaf stalk. This combination of dragonflies and lotus flowers can be found in painting manuals illustrating a pond in summer. In particular, the curling of the tips of lotus leaves appears to be a direct reference to painting manuals.
