This is an underdrawing for a painting of two figures. It bears an inscription “Yakhyo creates an underdrawing” in the upper-right section, indicating that the author of this work is the monk-painter Geumho Yakhyo (?–1928, active in the late 19th–early 20th c. (during the Joseon Dynasty)).
The outlines and drapery folds of the two figures show faint traces of charcoal sketching, but otherwise the figures are mostly drawn in a single stroke of a fine brush. The faces of the figures were skillfully delineated using very thin lines, but the drapery folds were added in an unrestrained manner with a rough brush. Whereas other underdrawings for Buddhist paintings are produced with distinct lines so that they can be transferred to ground cloths by tracing the lines, this work presents freer brushwork.
