These hanging scrolls feature magpies with plum blossoms, herons with grass, egrets with Manchurian wild rice, wild geese with reeds on a moonlit night, mallard ducks, cormorants against snowy mountains, and birds dozing off among bamboo in snow. The various birds are shown against a backdrop of eight scenes spanning the four seasons. The magpies and a plum tree represent spring. Since most of the birds depicted here are waterfowl, the plum tree is shown stretching out toward water. The feathers on the wings of the magpies are puffed out, as if wet from the rain. The egrets between yellow bedstraws and cattails denote a summer landscape. The wild geese under flowering reeds on a moonlit night and those coming down the river signify autumn. The cormorants against snowy mountains soaring like bizarre-looking rocks and the birds dozing off on bamboo branches show a winter landscape.
