A Procession of Horses on a Snowy Road to a Marketplace

The two images presented here are part of a painting album that is believed to have been produced by the court painter Yi Hyeongnok. It consists of twenty-five leaves depicting various subjects, including flowering plants, landscapes and figures, and dragons in clouds. The right leaf shown here features a procession of heavily loaded horses being led by an ox along a snowy road. The left leaf shows a scholar playing a six-stringed zither (geomungo) under a pine tree on a moonlit night. To scholars, playing the geomungo was an important form of self-cultivation.
