In this painting, Yun Geup (1697-1770) is clad in an official’s garment while sitting on a chair covered with a leopard hide. The painter realistically portrayed his wrinkles between his eyebrows, pox marks, age spots, and the wart on the face of 65-year-old Yun Geup. Such details clearly demonstrate the realism practiced in late-Joseon portraiture. It is highly probable that this portrait was produced to commemorate Yun’s promotion to junior first rank and entry into the Giroso Club of Senior Officials in 1762. Geunyeok Seohwajing (Biographical Dictionary of Korean Calligraphers and Painters) records that Byeon Sangbyeok painted a portrait of Yun Geup. Byeon is known for his proficiency at drawing animals and figures and is presumed to have created this painting.
