Complete View of Hwaseong Fortress

Hwaseong Fortress, which was constructed under the direction of King Jeongjo (r. 1776-1800), provided a military asset but also served as a center for agriculture and commerce. The waterways and paddies outside the fortress suggest the affluence of the farming area, whereas the pavilions and the ponds inside the fortress hint at the literati’s appreciation for the arts. The composition of this folding screen is presumed to have been based on the Uigwe (Royal Protocol) of Hwaseong Fortress Construction.
