Yeonggoedae Platform at the Temporary Palace in Onyang

This painting depicts Yeonggoedae Platform (靈槐臺) at the Temporary Palace in Onyang, a site where Crown Prince Sado used to perform archery. When the pagoda trees that Sado planted grew thick, a platform was built to honor him. It was named Yeonggoedae, meaning a platform of divine pagoda trees. His son King Jeongjo (正祖, r. 1776–1800) erected a stele next to the platform to commemorate this event. The stele bears calligraphy written by King Jeongjo on the front and texts composed by Jeongjo and written by his subject Yun Haengim (尹行恁, 1762–1801) on the back. The painting here includes records on Jeongjo’s stele inscriptions and the rewarding of Yun’s family.
