A Long River at Sunset

Yi Insang was an illegitimate son of a prestigious noble family, a fact which restricted his entry into government service. Yi instead cultivated himself through writing and painting and became a pioneer of dignified literati painting. This painting features a river in the center with hills at both sides. The composition creates a sense of calm. The viewer’s gaze lingers on a figure gazing out from a boat docked at the riverside below the hill in the foreground. The painting successfully captures the sentimental mood of sunset described in the accompanying poem.
