Buddhist Guardian Deity

This is a wooden sculpture of a Buddhist guardian deity. With his face colored white, he wears a blue crown with a cloud design while seated in a chair. This sculpture is presumed to have represented either Indra or Brahma and been enshrined in a Buddhist temple. There are several paintings of Buddhist guardian deities remaining from the Joseon Dynasty, but wooden sculptural examples are rare.
A CT scan has confirmed that a votive object presumed to be made from paper is inserted inside the head of the sculpture.
