Indra is a Hindu god from India who represents thunderbolts and possesses great power. The iconography of Indra originated in India and was later incorporated into Buddhism. Indra was turned into the deity governing the Trayastrimsa Heaven at the top of Mount Sumeru. The deity was worshipped as a being who protects the nation and can prolong one’s lifespan.
In the upper section of the painting are Indra with his hands clasped flanked by two Bodhisattvas. In the lower section, the protector Skanda is depicted with a sword placed above both arms. This composition of Indra surrounded by figures descending from heaven in the upper portion and Skanda surrounded by protective figures in the lower portion is characteristic of the painter Cheonyeo and his teacher Doil.
