This is an underdrawing for a portrait of a seated monk. Here, the monk is slightly angled to our left, as seen in monk portraits from the Joseon Dynasty. He wears an outer vestment, robe, and hat and holds a staff in his right hand and prayer beads in his left. The ink lines are thin and simple. It is presumed to be the work of Kim Eunho (1892–1979), a traditional painter active in the modern era. Kim’s figure paintings are characterized by realistic delineations of faces based on photographs and elaborate lines influenced by the Northern School of Painting. This work demonstrates Kim’s understanding of the expressive modes traditional to monk portraits of the Joseon Dynasty and his distinctively detailed depictions of figures.
