This portrait by the monk-painter Chukyeon presents Ssangwoldang Seonghwal. In the upper-left section of the painting is a red hanging scroll bearing a eulogy to Great Seon Master Ssangwoldang. The right end of the lower rod of the scroll bears the inscription “Hyesan”. Hyesan is a name that Chukyeon used until the 1910s. Like a literati painting, this work explicitly provides the name of its painter. The inclusion of an individual’s name in a Buddhist painting was a practice that only emerged in modern era. This painting demonstrates that monk artisans began to express their own individuality and self-identity as the principal agent of creation while adapting to the changes taking place in modern Korea.
