Amitabha Preaching in the Western Paradise

This painting illustrates a triad composed of Amitabha Buddha preaching in the Western Paradise, Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva. Amitabha Buddha was originally a bodhisattva named Dharmakara who made a vow to guide all sentient beings to salvation and became a Buddha upon attaining enlightenment. The belief that those who called upon the name of Amitabha would be reborn in the paradise gained great popularity, which led in turn to the widespread production of related Buddhist paintings. This triad painting was created by Hangyu, who worked in Gyeongsang-do Province in the late nineteenth century.
