Sixteen Arhats

Arhats are Buddhist disciples who have been entrusted with remaining in the world after the Buddha entered nirvana in order to protect the Buddhist Law until the advent of the Maitreya Buddha. This painting depicts five arhats and a group of their followers set against a landscape of trees, rocks, and a waterfall. In the upper section of the painting, the names of the second, fourth, sixth, eighth, and tenth arhats are written, which indicates that this painting must have belonged to a set of several paintings of sixteen arhats. This particular image was produced by Boamdang Geungbeop and Gye-ung who were active in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do Province in the late nineteenth century.
