Amitabha Preaching in the Western Paradise

This painting depicts Amitabha Buddha holding a peony while a group of deities gathers to hear his preaching. Since the depiction of Buddha holding a lotus flower commonly refers to Shakyamuni Buddha, who simply holds out a flower to his audience in order to teach them the truth of Buddhist law through a non-verbal method, this iconography of Amitabha Buddha is unusual. Blue-and-white vases in which lotus and peony flowers are arranged, an incense burner, and bookcases are placed on the Buddhist altar where Amitabha is seated. The elongated Buddhist altar and the objects placed over it can still be seen in Buddhist paintings from the modern era.
