Staff of Buddhist Duster with Chrysanthemum and Scroll Design

Lacquerware from the Goryeo dynasty is famous for its delicate and elaborate decoration. It is characterized by cutting each component of the design into extremely small parts and combining them. Goryeo artisans used mother-of-pearl, tortoise shell, and copper wire together to achieve a sophisticated yet elegant decorative beauty. There are only a small number of Goryeo lacquerware left in the world, and religious objects and other household items of the nobility are housed in the National Museum of Korea.
