Clothing Box with Lotus Scroll Design
Early Joseon lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl typically features one of two decorative motifs. The first motif is a chrysanthemum design, continuing a convention from the Goryeo period. Compared to Goryeo examples, however, the design of a stem is inlaid with mother-of-pearl, rather than with metal wire. The second motif is a spacious arrangement of alternating flowers and buds, such that most of the surface space is left undecorated. On such designs, the leaves are usually depicted as if they are blowing in the wind.
