Stele of Documents on the Amitabha Statue of Mujangsa Temple

This monument was erected to commemorate the enshrining of an image of Amitabha Buddha in Mujangsa Monastery by Queen Gyehwa (桂花王后) of Silla, King Soseong (昭聖王, r. 799-800)’s consort to honor her deceased husband. The inscription of the monument was made of characters selected from the works of Wang Xizhi (王羲之), and is regarded as a valuable source for the study of the great calligrapher. The monument was discovered by Hong Yangho (洪良浩, 1724-1802) and Kim Jeonghui (金正喜, 1786-1856). The site of Mujangsa Monastery is located in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
