Square Dish with Phoenix and Cloud, White porcelain painted in underglaze cobalt-blue

This is a square-shaped white porcelain dish painted with bonghwang and cloud designs in cobalt-blue underglaze. Bonghwang refers to a pair of mythical birds, with bong (鳳) referring to the cock and hwang (凰) the hen. It was considered an auspicious symbol which was believed to appear in times of peace under the rule of a noble king.
