Jar with Cranes and Peony, White porcelain painted in underglaze cobalt-blue

This is a white porcelain jar with a globular body that has been incised with thick, vertical lines at four points to accent its curvature. The body is decorated with four ogival designs in cobalt-blue underglaze, each featuring a composition of either a pair of cranes or peacocks, ornamental rocks, peonies, and clouds. The area surrounding the ogival frames features lozenge-shaped motifs consisting of auspicious characters. The exquisite arrangement of varied patternized designs with auspicious meanings suggests that the jar was used in the royal court.
