Stone Buddha

In 1936, this seated Buddha statue was recovered from a temple site in Gunsu-ri, Buyeo, where it had apparently once been enshrined in a wooden pagoda. The soft, peaceful smile on the plump face is characteristic of Baekje Buddhist sculpture. The figure has both hands clasped in front of its body, and both shoulders are covered by the long outer robe, which flows down over the knees to cover the top of the pedestal.
